The Gaspe Region-- is a wonderful spot to visit.

The countryside is beautiful, the people are very very friendly-- and helpful--

It is important to remember that French is the language here--

AND, the salmon fishing is as good as it gets.
To get to the Gaspe from northern Vermont, the best way is to drive up along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River.

It is hard to remember how HUGE the river is at this point, and in fact that it is very tidal-- with lots of eratics along the shore.
This river runs out of the Chic-Choc's to the St Lawrence. It is a medium-sized salmon river, with lots of pools-- some good general pools, and some that seem best at specific water levels. In any case, it is a beautiful setting.

Looking down on The Moulin -- a nice pool
It is easy for a salmon-addict to become too focused on the quarry.

It is also important to keep your eyes open for all of the other things that combine to make an area unique.

These are moose bones in a little grotto near a pool-----I stumbled on one of the biggest white-cedars I've seen------Although it is a bit tannin-stained, the water is very clear-- this is looking through about 2.5 feet of depth to bottom

---------------It is easy to walk up on a moose----------------------------------- find it is a cow and calf----------------------------------- and beat a hasty retreat across the river !
One thing that is really interesting-- and can only be done well when the water is very clear-- is to sight-fish for individually spotted salmon.

Sometimes they are pretty easy to see-- sometimes maddingly difficult.

I discovered that even when one is pretty easy to see through poloroid glasses, it is quite hard to capture that with a camera. This picture is an attempt to show what you look for.
The last evening I was there, the sky opened up and it rained harder then I have ever seen, in 2 bursts of about an hour each.

The river came up a LOT and was quite turbid--- in full spate.

I had to leave, but I bet the fishing was great on the dropping water.

These are a couple of shots I took on my way out the next morning.
