    • Required: Dendrology Handbook -- Reproduced by Champlain Valley Printing & Photocopy, San Remo Drive, South Burlington.
    • Recommended: Any of a number of tree twig keys and / or field guides
    Hand Lens: Very Handy!! You can purchase one from theUVM Book Store (get the large size!).

    Course Objectives:

    The goals of this course are for you to learn:
    • -- to identify (by sight), trees and important shrubs native to New England, and some commonly planted non-native trees;

    • -- the general identification characteristics of important trees native to other regions of the US;

    • --the most important silvical characteristics (i.e., range, tolerance, site requirements, etc.) of these species.

    Course Grade:

    • Lecture Quizzes--------25%
    • Mid-term Exam --------15%
    • Final Exam ------------15%
    • Lab Quizzes------------25%
    • Lab Final--------------15%
    • Plant Collection---------5%
    note: Lecture quizs will be given each Monday and may cover all material to date. No make-up quizzes will be given. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

    note: Lab quizs will be given each lab period and will require the field identification of trees and shrubs. Information required for each plant will be its common and scientific name, including family. No make-up quizzes will be given. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

    Study groups:

    I suggest that you try and form informal study groups. Based on feedback from previous semesters, many students have found that it is extremely helpful to study on a regular basis with other members of the class. GET OUT IN THE WOODS.. you can not learn this stuff inside!
