The Basics:
Starting a new page, Opening an old page

1. Open Netscape Communicator. In the File/New Menu, select/Blank Page.

2. To Open an old page go to the File Menu and select Open/Page in Composer and select the page you want to continue working on.
3. You can write on your blank page much like you would a wordprocessor.

Highlight text to change its style or color. Although you can use a variety of fonts it is best to stick to "Arial" "Times" or "Courier" because these fonts are on most computers and your document will then be seen as you want it to be seen. Under the Format menu you can access different fonts and styles.

When you put your mouse over an icon, it tells you what the icon does. Click on an icon to activate it.
For example  is the spell checking tool.

Page Title
4. Under the format menu select Page Title.  For title I find it easiest to use the file name for the page.
Remember the rules for file naming of web sites. They must be called something.html with no spaces, commas or other characters.

You can also include your name if you wish as author and keywords that search engines will use to find your site on the web.

Properties:
5. Under the format menu select Page Properties. Set your document background, font and link color also.
Make sure to select
Use Custom Colors.
Then double click on
the color icon you
wish to change.

You can also select an
image to use as the page background but make sure it is in the same folder as this page.

If you will be working on the same computer to create all the web pages of your site, you might also want to click the button that lets you "Apply these settings to all new blank pages."

6. USE HTML Colors only:
On a Mac, use the slider to identify your colors, on a Windows machine just click on the grid color of HTML choices.
Inserting a picture

7. Use the picture icon  to bring up the following window:

Write the exact name of the image you are using in the Image File Name box and make sure it is in the same folder as this html document. As long as you save this file in the same folder as the image you wish to use, you can use the Choose File button to identify it. Pictures for web pages must be in gif or jpeg format. Use jpegs for Photographs. In lesson 13 you will learn more about graphics.

To text wrap your picture, choose one of the options provided but be aware that you won't see it in Composer.

It is best not to have to resize pictures in code, make them the size you want them in Photoshop or other graphic program.

Adding Links to other websites

8. Select the text  you wish to make into a link and then click the insert a link button.
Include the address of the link. For sites other than your own, you must include the whole address which means start with http://......
For your own files you can include just the file name or find file to identify the one you wish to link to but make sure it is in the same folder.

9.You can also make a picture link to a site. Select the picture you wish to make into a link. Then click the insert link tool from the top menu. The link window for the graphic will appear.
Add the URL just like you did for text.

10. Make sure to save your site periodically. Sometimes computers crash, as you probably know.  :-)
