Our Bunny Initiation
picture of Gus Mike and I had been talking about getting a rabbit for quite a while, now that we owned our own house, but we hadn't gotten around to actually getting one yet. Around May of 1998, I happened to have a talk with my boss, and she mentioned that her neice Celeste was looking for a new home for their rabbit. They were moving into a smaller home, and already had too many pets. The rabbit was about 1 1/2 years old, and was a white mini-lop neutered male. He was very sweet and tame, and was named "Cuddles".

After a two second conversation, Mike and I decided to take the leap, and adopt the bunny. From the moment we made the decision, we lost all shreds of patience and absolutely couldn't wait to meet him! A few long weeks later, we drove to my boss' house, and picked up a scared little bunny in a tiny cage, who had just been driven over from NY state the day before. We took him home, and became the thrilled caretakers of a new bunny. (pictured to the left lounging in some of our plants). We renamed him Gus - short for Snufulufugus, though he is a very cuddly guy, and we call him Cuddles sometimes too (as well as Silly Thing, Cutie, Mister Muffet, Thing-Thing, Muffin Man, Poopy Bunny, little Bean, Bean head, Silly Head, and many other names). He litter box trained himself perfectly. We have been keeping a journal describing our experiences as new bunny keepers.

He came in a very small, cramped cage (though we were pleased to find out later that he wasn't housed in that cage normally - he had a doggie crate to himself in his previous home). We built him a much larger run. It's about 8 feet by 10 feet, and is located in a corner of our basement. He has a light on a timer, so he experiences a natural light and dark cycle, and he stays nice and cool while we're at work. We pet him and feed him fresh herbs and veggies in the morning, and let him run around upstairs in the evenings.

When you pick him up, he's a big puddle of fur.. very tame and relaxed. He'll often fall asleep in your lap if you pet him softly.. We occasionally borrow a digital camera from Mike's work and take pictures of Gus. The picture quality is only so-so, but some of the shots are absolutely adorable. To see more recent pictures, feel free to check out our new Bunny Gallery. We've also constructed our first (hopefully of many) Bunny Song! Check it out!

I've found that one of the best net sites for bunny information is the House Rabbit Society, which my bunny buddy David Houston recommended. The House Rabbit Society also has a book, which we recently bought. It has lots of interesting and practical information, and many adorable photos. One of my favorite bunny stories is that of Woo and Koo, two bunnies living Japan. They even have some animations of the bunnies online! If you search for bunny links, beware that there are many sites that mix keeping bunnies as pets with keeping bunnies and then eating them. I recommend that you stay away from the "commercial rabbitry" type places, unless you have a strong stomach. If you know of any information or plans for building rabbit hutches or good toy ideas, or any other bunny information, please write to me!.

We recently had to give Gus a bath. Here is the full story and some pictures.
