About Me
UVM Science Writer
I'm a staff writer at the University of Vermont covering all
the natural and physical sciences for the University of Vermont,
astronomy to zoology. I have a particular interest in conservation biology, natural history, and environmental science.
I also work with reporters and editors from local and national
media
outlets to connect them with UVM experts and research news.
My writing appears in
Vermont
Quarterly, the magazine of the University of Vermont (UVM) and
the view, UVM's weekly on-line
newsmagazine.
Freelance
I'm also an experienced freelance science writer for magazines and
newspapers with interests in wildlife, conservation biology, natural
history and outdoor recreation. My work has appeared in the
Boston Globe,
Wild Earth, Conservation, Middlebury Magazine, ScienceDaily,
BiologyNews, and
the
Burlington Free Press.
Teaching
I teach a course on
Environmental Journalism at the University of
Vermont through the
Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural
Resources. Previously I taught Print Journalism in the
Professional Writing Program at Champlain College.
Background
For five years, I worked as senior editor and staff writer for
Wild
Earth, a national conservation journal that combined science
reporting,
literary nature writing and poetry.
Before coming to the University of Vermont, I spent several years as full-time freelance writer.
For more than a decade, I've made my living as a writer and
editor and
writing teacher. Though I am in love with
words, my first commitment is to conservation—to the protection of
nature and wild places and creatures, to human stewardship and
enjoyment of natural resources.
