EDSC 209 Major Goals: Make a difference in the lives of others
and
create agency for yourself!
Course Overview and Expected Outcomes
The 209 Practicum, designed as a field experience in the school setting, provides students in the Secondary Education Program with the opportunity to observe and reflect about teaching and the teaching process. Through direct experience with students, teachers, and other school personnel, students taking 209 will become aware of the complex realities of the classroom and school culture and appreciate the different learning needs of all students.
As a student in 209 you will be asked to take an active role in the life of the school by setting goals, developing relationships, asking questions, and continually evaluating your own learning and professional growth. The goal of this course is to provide you with new perspectives about the world of school and the many services that exist to support the learning needs of all students. The relationships you build with teachers, counselors, special educators, and students will help teach you about yourself and your choice to pursue a future as an educator. Students in EDSC 209 are expected to: Investigate personal choice to teach, Understand the “Whole school culture”, Demonstrate ability to plan, implement, and evaluate instruction on “one on one” and small group basis, Demonstrate the dispositions and attributes of an educator, and Reflect on these experiences in course journal.
By taking EDSC 209 you are a member of the South Burlington Learning Community. During the semester you will be expected to behave as a professional and act accordingly. What does being a professional look, feel, and sound like? In the South Burlington Community there are professional standards for adult behavior as well as student behavior.
