The Genealogies in Hesiod's Theogony

In this list, there are two divisions: 1) the children of Chaos and 2) the children of Earth (through union with Earth and Tartarus). There is no miscegenation between these two divisions.

It is clear that Hesiod says that Chaos was first, but when he says Earth is next, it is not clear whether Earth is next in time, and if so, what relation (if any) she has to Chaos. The same is true of Tartarus, but Heaven is clearly the offspring of Earth alone. Love is a special case, for it has no offspring (and no parents, like Chaos, Earth, and Tartarus), but its temporal place seems to be similar to the temporal place of Earth and Tartarus.

Once we get beyond Chaos in the first list, and beyond Earth in the second list, each indentation signifies a later generation, and being listed immediately under another being and indented one more time than that being signifies being born from that being. For example,

Some beings are the product of only one parent, others are the product of two parents (always a male and a female).

This list does not include all of the mortal-immortal unions and offspring that are recounted after about line 980 of the Theogony.
