Encryption standards deadline approaching
Reminder: Encryption Standards Deadline Approaching!
January 1 Deadline for Encrypted File Transfer and Terminal Access to Zoo
Starting January 1, 2004 all access to UVM hosts from off campus (e.g. home dial-up, DSL, and cable modem connections) will require software that encrypts -- securely scrambles -- all communication over the Internet.
- Instead of telnet (CRT, Better telnet, and so on), use ssh (Macintosh) or ssh Secure Shell (Windows)
- Instead of ftp (FTP Voyager, Fetch, WS_FTP, and so on), use Fugu (Macintosh) or ssh Secure Shell (Windows)
It's not too early to start using the new encrypting software, since all CIT supported servers, such as those in the Zoo cluster, already support encrypted protocols.
The required programs are available free-of-charge in the UVM Software download site.
Email access from off campus will also require encryption at some
time after January 1. Virtually everyone will have to make some minor
configuration changes; some may have to switch to new email software.
This was scheduled to go into effect on January 1, but is being delayed
while CIT writers develop documentation.
