Matt Jungers
Advisor: Paul Bierman
Degree: MS Geology

Matt’s research focuses on utilizing cosmogenic 10-Be to determine sediment production and transport rates on hillslopes within varied climatic and tectonic settings. His study areas include the Susquehanna River basin of Pennsylvania, the Waipoa River basin of New Zealand’s North Island, the Drift Creek Wilderness of Oregon’s Coast Range, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the area surrounding Amparafaravola on Madagascar’s central plateau. His project has the dual goals of further expanding the practical use of cosmogenic nuclides to hillslope studies, and refining our limited understanding of the connection between hillslope processes and basin-wide erosion rates.

Before making his way to UVM, Matt received his bachelors degree from Williams College in Williamstown, MA, under the advising of Dr. David Dethier. His work at Williams used GIS and cosmogenics to explore the relationship between degrees of weathering and erosion rates in the Colorado Front Range west of Boulder, CO. When it comes time to take life less seriously, Matt heads to the Adirondacks, Gunks, or somewhere in New Hampshire to climb rock or ice. He is also very excited about riding around on his recently converted single-speed bicycle.
