Committees on Human Research
Faculty Sponsorship of Student Research
Fellows, residents, post-doctoral fellows, post-doctoral associates, post-doctoral trainees, and students (graduate or undergraduate) cannot conduct human subject research without having a faculty sponsor/instructor who is responsible for overseeing the research activities.
Research projects in an institutional setting (i.e., educational projects, independent student research, research practica, course-assigned research) must be submitted to the Committees on Human Research regardless of whether or not the project meets the federal definition of “research.”
In some cases, projects that are part of a course requirement may not fit this definition and may be exempt from review; however the Committee still requires documentation of this activity from the instructor. Below are some links to assist faculty sponsors with these responsibilities.
