An Overview

UVM has a university-wide core biological science curriculum that serves a number of academic departments and divisions.  Each department and division offers undergraduate majors, but a distinct "integrated" biological science major is also available for those interested in a Bachelor of Science degree program with maximum flexibility and breadth of study.  The Biological Science major is offered under the auspices of both the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).  Bachelor or Arts degrees remain a part of each separate college (e.g. Biology BA or Plant Biology BA).

Those interested in a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Science enroll in one college or the other depending on their interests and career choices. The curriculum consists of a core set of courses in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, and a diverse choice of advanced electives in several areas of biology (e.g., genetics, population or organismal biology, neurobiology). An integral component of the curriculum is an opportunity to participate in experimental learning in some of the colleges' research labs. This modern science-driven education is designed to emphasize a fundamental knowledge of biology along with an advanced specialization in a subdiscipline of the student's choice as outlined with their academic advisor.

Graduates of this program are well prepared to compete in the job market as B.S. level scientists for jobs in industry, the private sector, government agencies, pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies, or to continue with advanced studies leading to M.S., Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M. degrees and subsequent employment in academia, industry, work in government (e.g., USDA, USFS, US Department of Fish and Game) or the health sciences professions.
