What are cells anyway?
All of the living organisms on Earth are divided in pieces called cells. There are smaller pieces such as proteins and organelles. There are also larger pieces called systems and communities. Cells are small compartments that hold all of the biological equipment necessary to keep an organism alive and successful on Earth. A main purpose of a cell is to organize. Cells hold a variety of pieces and each cell has a different set of functions. It is easier for an organism to grow and survive when cells are present. You could only get to a certain size if you were one cell. Being one cell you certainly would not have the ability to think, lift objects, and run. Cells make our life possible. ![]() |
| Your Challenge: Your challenge is to work with a partner to explore this site and the additional sites we have given you to look at. Please use these sites to gather information about plant and animal cells. Focus on what makes up these cells and what the similarities and differences are between plant and animal cells. Please use the worksheet that we hand out to keep track of this information. Once you feel like you have gathered enough information with you partner, please organize your information about plant and animal cells using the venn diagram provided on your worksheet. |

Follow-up challenge!
If you have
finished
the first challenge and you have time left over, you can begin the
follow-up challenge. Using the back of your worksheet, draw a
picture
of either a plant cell or an animal cell. You can look back in
your
notes and continue to explore the websites we have provided. Use
as
much detail as you can and SHHHH! don't tell your partner whether you
are doing a plant cell or an animal cell! When you are done, you
will
switch papers with your partner and see if you can tell(thinking back
to everything you have learned) Once you think you have correctly
identified it, write down a few clues that let you know that the cell
was the kind of cell you thought it was. Then swap papers with
your
partners again and see if you were correct!! |
