Grade 5/6
Your Challenge:

For many, immigrating to the United States through Ellis Island was an exciting opportunity to get a fresh start on life.  In fact, over 12 million people entered the ports in New York and onto Ellis Island!  There were a large amount of people passing through NY since that was where the first Federal immigration station existed.  Although Ellis Island has been called the "Island of Tears" the Main Station visit was usually fast so people could start their new lives in America quickly.  New York had one of the most popular ports for immigrants to come to as there were many other cities that people could have entered through but instead they chose Ellis Island.  The financial possibilities looked more positive in the U.S. than the outlook in other countries; therefore, America was a desirable destination that attracted people searching for a better life for themselves and their families.
Although it was a good opportunity for many, other non-European immigrants did not have the same positive experiences.  Asian immigrants were banned from coming to America.  For people that were considered lower or third-class citizens the immigration event was also not uncomplicated as it may have been for people with money.  The poor people were forced to remain on the boat while the rich passengers were allowed to get off the ship and go to a building where they were tested medically and legally.  The first and second class citizens had an easier time passing through customs and were on their way to freedom much more quickly than people considered to be third-class citizens.  Many people believed that America was the perfect place to find freedom and justice but for some less fortunate, immigration was not an easy path. Answer the questions provided below to help you better understand The Ellis Island experience and immigration.
