The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout,

down came the rain and washed the spider out,

out came the sun and dried up all the rain,

and the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.

Hey kids!  Did you notice that the weather is getting colder every day?  We spend more time indoors as it gets colder and so do spiders.  Yes, that means that some spiders are choosing to live in our houses in the colder months rather than freezing outside.  You might see their webs in the corner of a ceiling where it‘s hard to reach with a duster, or in the attic in spots that are not used much.  Since spiders live around us, let’s get to know all about them!  Don’t worry, most spiders are harmless and beautiful but we don’t touch them because they might bite.  You will have fun exploring web sites to learn more about our spider neighbors.

          THE CHALLENGE:

Part 1.  Your job is to learn all about spiders by exploring web sites.  After researching, you will be able to answer the following questions about spiders:

          1.  Name a poisonous spider.

          2.  How do spiders make their webs?

          3.  What species (or family) are spiders a part of?

          4.  How many legs do spiders have?

Share your findings with the class.

Part 2.  Find a picture that shows the anatomy of a spider, (all of its parts).  Study the picture and create your own spider that you will draw and label.  Your imaginary spider can be any color and any design you want, as long at it has it’s regular spider parts.  Label the parts of your spider.  We will share our spider drawings with the class and all the drawings will be hung in the science area on the bulletin board.
