What’s up With the
Big Rubber Band?
At the science
learning center in your classroom there is big, green elastic
band. What is that thing all about? What does it have to do with muscles
and
bones? Many of you have already looked
at it and used it. What does
it feel like
when you stretch it? I got this band
from a physical therapist.
She gave it to
me after I hurt my arm. What is a
physical therapist? Have
You ever been
to a physical therapist? Why do you
think she gave me the band?
Your challenge: Help me figure out what this band is
all about. I
want to teach
the class, with your help, what it has to do with muscles and
bones. To do this you will have to learn about what
a physical therapist
is and what they do. I want to teach the class more about muscles and
bones using the information you find out.
Search the
internet to find out:
· What is a
physical therapist?
· Why would
someone go see a physical therapist?
· Why would it
be important for someone to see a physical therapist?
· What happens
when you visit a physical therapist?

Use
the information you find out about physical therapists, and the
information
you already know about bones and muscles to come up with
some ideas about the green band.
· What do you
think it is used for?
· Can you think
of any ways to show what a physical therapist would
tell you to do
with it?
Draw me a picture of the inside of a physical
therapist’s office.
· Who is there?
· What are the
people doing?
· What things
are there?
Write me a letter to tell me about the
ideas you have to share with everyone.
· What did you
find out about physical therapists, bones, muscles, and
the band?
· Could you tell
about and show your ideas?
