Wanda Heading-GrantVice President
Dr. Wanda Heading-Grant was appointed as Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs in April 2013 and before that had become UVM's first Chief Diversity Officer in 2010. Dr. Heading-Grant served as Associate Provost for Multicultural Affairs and Academic Initiatives from 2007-2010. She was an Associate Dean of College of Education and Social Services from 2003-2007. Prior to that she was the Executive Director of the Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Office from 1994-2003. She has spent her career focusing on issues of education, social service, social justice and equity. Dr. Heading-Grant holds a Clinical Associate Professor appointment in the Department of Social Work, and she is a member of the Graduate College at the University of Vermont.
Senior Executive Director of Diversity, Engagement & Professional Development
Dr. Sherwood Smith oversees a department composed of: ALANA Student Center, Center for Cultural Pluralism, LGBTQA Center, Professional Development and Training, and the Women's Center. He also has an appointment as Lecturer in Integrated Professional Studies. Dr. Smith is passionate about issues of social justice and intensely curious to explore the social constructions of culture, identity and status.
Associate Chief HR Officer
Jes Kraus leads and oversees Human Resource Services and Operations, and the AAEO Office's functions including recruitment and compliance programs. Before joining the staff at UVM in 2011, Jes was the director of the Vermont State Employees Association, practiced as an attorney, and served as a police officer. He earned a BS in Government from the US Coastguard Academy and a Juris Doctor (cum laude) from Vermont Law School.
Beverly ColstonDirector, Mosaic Center for Students of Color
As the Director of the Mosaic Center for Students of Color Beverly facilitates the mission to empower student development and full participation in the university community. As a UVM staff member for fifteen years, Colston has participated vigorously in the life of the institution including service on: The President’s Commission on Racial Diversity; The 2009 Accreditation Steering Committee; The Athletics Diversity Task Force; The 2010 Provost’s Search Team; The 2011 Presidential Search Team. Her institutional leadership has been recognized by UVM Police Services, Project Stay and The Women’s Center. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Colston arrived to Vermont twenty six years ago via Philadelphia, PA where she earned a B.A. is Psychology from The University of Pennsylvania. She is pleased to have earned her M.Ed. from UVM in 2011.
Joel ShapiroDirector, Professional Development and Training
Joel provides oversight for the Professional Development & Training department. Professional Development and Training offers a full range of workshops, classes, resources and departmental consultation to improve success and job effectiveness for individual employees as well as at the departmental level. He has served the University for over 25 years in various capacities including Director of the Employee Assistance Program and Work/Life Services and Director of HR Organizational Services. He has an MSW from the University of Pennsylvania, is a licensed clinical social worker and has a certification in organization development from the National Training Labs.
Mary BrodskyLabor and Employee Relations Manager
Mary Brodsky manages labor and employee relations and supervises faculty services. Before coming to UVM in 2015, she was the Acting Director for the Employee Relations Division of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Mary advised top-level officials on complex matters pertaining to employee discipline and the administration of CBP’s collective bargaining agreements. She began her career in the federal government with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, where she worked in the Offices of Congressional and Public Affairs, Equal Employment Opportunity, and Labor and Employee Relations. Since December 2010, she has served as a Commissioner for Vermont Human Rights Commission. She received a B.A. from St. Michael's College.
Director, Benefits, Compensation & HRIS
Greg oversees benefits, compensation, job classifications and HR information systems. He comes to UVM with over 25 years of experience in human resource management with mid-size and large employers. Prior to joining UVM, he served as an employer consultant with Hickok & Boardman HR Intelligence, Director of Benefits & HRIS for McCormick Spices in Baltimore, Maryland and Director of Compensation, Benefits & HRIS for Glatfelter Paper in York, PA. Greg earned his BS in Labor Relations at Cornell University and an MBA at the University of Maryland. Greg is a Senior Certified Professional with the Society for Human Resource Management and a Certified Compensation Professional with WorldAtWork.
Director, Women's Center
Melissa oversees all of the activities at the Women’s Center and works to develop and uphold its vision and mission. Melissa has worked in a variety of social justice movements, including anti-violence, racial justice, reproductive health, and queer and trans rights. Melissa holds a BA in Women and Gender Studies and a Masters in Social Work, both from Ohio State University. Before coming to UVM in March 2017, Melissa spent seven years as the Executive Director of Outright Vermont.
Director, LGBTQA Center
Kate joined the LGBTQA Center as Director in July 2017. Her career thus far has focused on building communities where all people thrive, health equity, and liberation for queer and trans people. Kate holds a BSW from New York University and an MPH in Sexuality & Health from Columbia University. Before coming to UVM, Kate was the Assistant Director of the Center of Excellence in Maternal Child Health at the University of California, Berkeley.
Paul Suk-Hyun Yoon
Senior Advisor for Strategic Diversity Assessment & Research
Paul was appointed Senior Advisor for Strategic Diversity Assessment & Research at UVM in March 2018. He received a Ed.M. in School Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction Secondary Education History from the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, and a B.A. in Philosophy from Boston College. Paul has worked in education for the past 12 years. He served as a teacher in the Boston Public Schools, as an Assistant Principal at a high school in Springfield, MA, at the middle school in South Burlington, and was a lecturer at Boston College. In addition to his work at UVM, Paul is also a Partner with CQ Strategies, LLC a local consultancy that helps organizations become more culturally proficient through training, education, resources, and on-going support.
