11. COLCHESTER AVENUE AT RIVERSIDE AVENUE LOOKING SOUTHWEST

(no date)

This undated photograph was taken from the same position as the previous image, close to the Winooski Bridge abutment at the bottom of Colchester Avenue. However, the bare trees indicate a different season. McAllister likely shot this image the previous winter or spring (1929), or even in the winter or spring of 1928, just months after the flooding in November 1927.

The road in the foreground is broken up and filled with gravel, perhaps a reminder of the damage cause by the floodwaters, but more likely a result of the construction work to rebuild the Winooski bridge. An electric line for the street car system runs across the foreground as well. A trolley car can be seen on the right side of the print, behind the blurred image of a man in the road. There are several billboards along the edge of Riverside Avenue, then called Lower Winooski Road.

The state of Vermont no longer allows billboards to be displayed along its roadways. However, there is an electronic sign temporarily installed between Colchester and Riverside Avenue to warn motorists of the road construction work taking place in 2005 on both sides of the Winooski Bridge. It continues to be a very busy intersection.
