Westerly view of North Street from intersection at North Champlain Street, L.L. McAllister, circa 1935

This early 1930's L.L. McAllister photo that shows 143 North Champlain of the left and 106/108/110 North Street on the right. In the Photo we are looking west down North Street. We see street car tracks, utility poles and streetlights but no vehicles or people.

106/108 North Street first appears on the 1900 Sanborn map. This building was also mixed-use. Both buildings housed locally famous shops for quite a while. In 1922, New York Fashion started its long history in 106 {1}, while renters lived above, and 108 housed The Great A&P Tea Company . Eventually in 1925 {2}, A&P Tea became 110 as the site was split up to become 106,108, and 110. 108 then became homes for renters.

143 North Champlain shares a building with 141 North Champlain and 139 North Champlain, but 141 and 139 are not visible in the photographs and have much the same use as all the buildings in the area: businesses on the first floor and living space on the second floor. According to the 1906 Sanborn map, 143 North Champlain was a private school. Though, 143 eventually became a wholesale flour store {3}and then eventually a grocery store. It appears vacant in the McAllister photograph.

Westerly view of North Street from intersection at North Champlain, Michaela Hutchins, October 18, 2005. UTM coordinates (NAD 83): 0641722, 4927260.

The present day image of 143 North Champlain and 106/108/110 North street shows the changes of time which includes an addition of a gable roof to 106/108/110 North Street. Unlike the previous image we see an abundance of vehicles, an absence of utility poles and new traffic lights and street signs.
