Facing east on North Street at the intersection of North Champlain Street. August 18, 1930. (18T 0641702 UTM 4927240) In this image the public works project of 1930 is in full swing. To the left of the construction equipment stands the two story commercial building at 146 to 148 North Champlain on the corner of North Street and North Champlain. The building offers commercial space with storefront, awnings and recessed double door entrance on the first floor and apartments on the floor above. Built between 1889 and 1900, [1] the building housed the drugstore opened by Eugene Gosselin around the same time as the buildings construction. [2] Gosselin’s Drugstore would operate at this location, and for a period at 194 North Street, for better part of the 20th Century. [3]
On the right side of the frame at the previously discussed144 North Champlain Street, a man sweeps the steps of the store and at the very edge of the frame one of the large storefront windows of 138-143 North Champlain reflects the work on the street.

(18T 0641702 UTM 4927240) The current image of the commercial building at 146-148 North Champlain Street reveals a certain lose of its former grandeur. The first floor commercial space has been shifted from the North Champlain Street side to the North Street and stained clapboards have replaced the painted ones from the second story window line down. From that window line up, the building has been altered very little. The pilasters and bracketed cornice survive, as do the flat lintels above the windows and peaked lintel above the center window on the North Champlain street side.
The storefront window of the former Scrumptious Café on the right edge of the frame here and in the original image has survived the years and retains its intended size orientation and function. |
