The image on the left depicts the street work in full swing.  The building near the center of the image at 144 North Champlain Street is a two-story brick building that has housed a number of buildings over the years, ranging from a cobbler in the early 1900’s [1] to a barbershop in the 1960’s and 70’s. [2]   The main commercial space is accessed through the storefront on North Champlain Street. The structure itself is shown on an 1889 Sanborn Insurance Map as being two and one half stories tall [3] and a 1903 city directory lists C.D. Vincent as selling boots and shoes in the commercial first floor and the St. Germaine family as residing in the upstairs apartment. [4]

Beyond this building and further down North Street there can be seen three buildings form the mid to late nineteenth century.  All three were demolished to make room for the new Lawrence Barnes School in the late 1950’s. [5]

To the right of 144 North Champlain Street at 138 North Champlain Street sits a small one-and-one-half-story house built near the end of the nineteenth century.

In the current image 144 North Champlain Street has changed very little with exception of the ornamental concrete work made to resemble stone that has been added to the first floor of the buildings brick surface. Currently Vantage Press operates in the buildings commercial space. Modern additions have been placed on the rear of the building facing North Street.

The small residence at 138 North Champlain, visible to the right of Vantage Press, has undergone very little change since the time of the Louis McAllister image, besides a new coat or two of paint.
