The Old North End of Burlington, Vermont is small area between North Street and Manhattan Drive in a grid-like structure. This website will focus on the area of North Street to Manhattan Drive, and Elmwood to Park Street, between the years of 1877 and 1890. The following links give archival research and a photo of each building. During these years the Old North End was expanding with newly wooden vernacular buildings. The owners of the buildings were local laborers who worked for companies like H.A Ray, a carriage manufacturing company, and Shepard & Morse Lumber, Co. Also, many families of the Old North End owned a small meat market or general store. Their homes were modest in size and often were rental properties or duplexes. Families resided close to their relatives and near their places of employment. Often families would live above their business. The history of these buildings and the people who lived in them, give a glimpse of life in a New England town in the late 1800's.
