What still stands from between 1869 and 1877 in
Burlington, Vermont?
40 Allen Street
Opposite 19 Allen Street sits this building. It too was
built circa 1873. Buildings such as these were commonly built to house working
class people and their families and can be seen throughout the North End and
other neighborhoods close to the waterfront. The first owner was Phillip Barber
who, coincidentally, owned a barber shop on Church Street[1].
Today this building contains two apartments. Although the exterior finishes are
quite different than what they may have originally been, the integrity of the
house is still intact and it footprint is similar to that of the building shown
on the 1890 Hopkins Map.
