What still stands from between 1869 and 1877 in Burlington, Vermont?

265 N. Winooski Avenue

This two-story house sits along the west side of North Winooski Avenue, near Archibald Street.  The house features one-over-one, double hung sash windows, vinyl siding, and stone foundation.  The roof is flat, with a cornice along the front facade only.  Entrance is on the right side of the front facade, sheltered by a two-story porch extending width of the building.  A large two-story bay window encompasses much of the front of the building.  An addition protrudes from the back end.

The 1900 Sanborn map reveals only the main block and bay window.  The porch and addition appear on the 1978 Sanborn map.  The 1877 Birds-Eye Map shows a gable front structure.  It is likely the original peaked roof was removed to add more space to the second floor.

Very little information could be found regarding this property.  The 1890 Hopkins map reveals Mrs. A. Mitchell as the owner, however, she does not live here, she merely leases it out.1 Raymond C. Duby, a wheelwright, lived here for a year or so in 1900 and 1901.2
