What still stands from between 1869 and 1877 in Burlington, Vermont?

242 North Street

This one-and-one-half story, gable front house sits along the north side of North Street, near North Winooski Avenue.  The house features two-over-two, double hung sash windows, aluminum siding, concrete foundation, asphalt shingle roof with raking eaves, and a small chimney at the rear gable end.  A large two-story porch with a shallow pitched roof and half walls covers the front facade and shelters the entrance in the left bay.  A large, two-story, pent roof addition extends from the rear, with a second, smaller addition extending off its back end.

The two-over-two sash windows, the raking eaves, and small chimney are characteristic of the 1870s.  The asphalt shingle roof probably replaced the original slate.

The original block of the house was a rectangular, gable front structure.  The first addition appears on the 1885 Sanborn map, but the second addition was later, appearing on the 1978 Sanborn map.  The 1978 map also reveals a porch along the westerly facade, behind the main block, alongside the addition, however, that porch has been removed.  The porch was added around 1940, contrasting with the original building design and massing.1  A few similar porches exist around the Old North End.

No information could be found regarding the original occupants, however the 1881-1883 Burlington City Directory reveals several boarders at this address, most of whom stayed only for a year, such as Caroline Parady, Joseph McGrath, mason, Octave Lapointe, employed by Matthews and Hickock, Theophile Lapointe, carpenter, and D.F. Erno, paperhanger.  Joseph McGrath stayed until 1922, indicating he was most likely the owner.2  Around 1890, Mary Shanahan, widow, moved in until around 1899.3  The house is currently being used as apartments.4
