What still stands from between 1869 and 1877 in Burlington, Vermont?

170-172 N. Winooski Avenue

This two-story, ell plan house sits midway along the east side of North Winooski Avenue, past North Street.  The house features two-over-two, double hung sash windows, aluminum siding, stone foundation, irregularly shaped slate roof with raking eaves, and tall, central chimney.  Two entrances sit along the front facade, enclosed under a two-story porch with wrought iron posts and railings.  The shutters were most likely added with the aluminum siding.  An addition protrudes from the rear.

The 1894 Sanborn map reveals a porch extending along the southerly facade, ending at the intersection of the ells.  The current porch appears on the 1978 Sanborn map, along with the rear addition.

No information regarding the original occupant could be found, although J. William Blondin sold this property to Alexander Gordon, April 1, 1872.1  There was not a Gordon listed in the Burlington City Directories as living at the property, so it was most likely rented out.  A Nelson Gordon was listed on the 1890 map as owning 168 N. Winooski Avenue, the neighboring property to the south.  The two may have been related.  Andre Major, working for A.J. Ferguson, as residing here from around 1881-1919.2  The house is currently for multiple-family use.
