309/311 South Winooski Avenue

On the 1869 map, this lone structure appears on the western side of Elm Street between Adams and Spruce Streets.  The building is labeled simply D.A.S., thus indicating that it was perhaps an outbuilding on the Smalley Estate.  From 1889 until the 1920’s this building was occupied as a duplex with one half occupied by a gardner named John Baker.  It is possible that Baker was a gardener for the Smalley Estate.  Smalleys continued living at the estate until 1917 when it was converted into apartments.(1)
