35 Spruce Street

This home was built around 1865. The first occupant was R. McLaughlin who was employed as a carpenter. It is therefore reasonable to believe that he may have built the house himself. McLaughlin remained in the home until the 1890's. The building has elements of both Greek Revival and Italianate styles which mark it as a transitional building. McLaoughlin's son John was also a builder.(1) In the twentieth century, residents included an employee of the Baldwin Manufacturing Co., a New England Telephone operator, an assistant librarian at U.V.M., and an assistant chemist at U.V.M..(2) This is typical of the small working class homes of Spruce Street.
