189 Cliff Street or 383 South Prospect

This house was also constructed in 1859 by architect William Bergholtz as part of the Overlake Estate. Number 189 was originally a carriage house. The center portion of the building served as a space for carriages and harnesses, while the two wings housed the stables. Harold and Mabel Mayforth purchased the carriage house and stable from the Clark's, decedents of Le Grand Canon, for $2,500 in 1926. Burlington architect Louis Newton was commissioned to convert the building into a home. The portion of Buckthorn hedge and brick wall that screen the property are thought to be original to the 1859 construction.(1) In 1930 David Howe, treasurer and business manager of the Burlington Free Press, acquired the home. Howe remained in the home into the 1950's.(2)
