The origins of this building are obscure. The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation considered that the 1850's Greek Revival portion of the house visible above the one-story modern additions may have been an addition to or remodeling of an earlier building, since the shop of hatter William Seymour (who lived at 223 Pearl Street) was listed at this site since 1827 or earlier. In 1883-92 it was the home of Byron Jones, a grocer, and from 1893 to 1926 it was the office and home of Dr. George I. Forbes, with members of the Forbes family reportedly residing in the house until the 1950's. (1)
