The Honors College

Bylaws of the Faculty of the Honors College

  1. Membership
    1. The Faculty: The faculty shall consist of all faculty members of the University of Vermont, as defined by the Faculty Senate bylaws.
    2. The Honors College Council: The Honors Council shall be the primary governing body setting curriculum and advising the dean on Honors College policy. The Honors College Council shall consist of one representative from each of the undergraduate units' curriculum committees, one representative from each of the undergraduate units' honors programs, one undergraduate student representative appointed by the dean, one representative from the library faculty, and any other faculty, administrative, staff, or student representation deemed appropriate by the dean and approved by the Honors College Council.
  2. Officers
    1. The dean shall preside at meetings of the Honors College Council. When absent, the dean will appoint a member of the faculty to preside.
  3. Meetings
    1. Meetings of the Honors College Council shall be scheduled by the dean at least once during each semester. Meetings may also be called by written petition supported by three members of the Honors College Council.
    2. The dean shall provide the Honors College Council with two weeks warning of all meeting times and places, and provide an agenda and minutes of previous meetings one week in advance of each meeting.
    3. All Honors College faculty, as well as any other members of the university community, are welcome to attend any Honors College Council meeting. With the dean's approval, they may place items on the agenda and speak to issues before the council.
    4. Decisions of the Honors College Council will be taken by majority vote of the members of the Honors College Council present at its meetings.
    5. A quorum at Honors College Council meetings shall consist of at least two-thirds of the Honors College Council.
    6. The Honors College faculty shall meet at least once a year.
    7. Any action of the Honors College Council (including actions under section 5.A. below) may, upon appeal by a motion (introduced, seconded and passed by majority vote), at a meeting of the Honors College faculty, be referred to the faculty for final decision.
  4. Committees
    1. A Curriculum Subcommittee of the Honors College Council will consist of the representatives from the undergraduate units' curriculum committees, and any other members appointed by the dean.
    2. A Student Admissions and Retention Subcommittee of the Honors College Council will consist of the representatives from the undergraduate colleges' honors programs, and any other members appointed by the dean.
    3. The dean will appoint other committees as needed.
  5. Amendments
    1. Bylaws may be amended by two-thirds vote of the entire Honors College Council and approval of the dean.

Admission and Eligibility

Students' applications to the University of Vermont simultaneously serve as their applications to the Honors College. The Admissions Office will work with the Honors College to identify students who might be eligible for enrollment. Up to 200 incoming first-year students will be chosen.

Outstanding students at the end of their first year at the University of Vermont may apply for admission to the Honors College in their sophomore year. They must have achieved minimum grade-point averages of 3.4. Sophomore admission requires an application form, letters of recommendation from UVM faculty, a transcript from first-year classes, and a brief essay. Up to 100 sophomores will be admitted to the Honors College annually.
