Peer Leader Program
The Peer Leader Program is an initiative designed as a resource for first year students as they transition to college life in the Honors College. Incoming students are grouped with an upper-class Honors College student who serves as the Peer Leader- a mentor sharing experience, listening, giving advice, and ultimately being the resource you need during your first semester here.
Throughout the year various programs and events are helped to meet the unique needs of first year students in a new environment. We host these events to encourage our students to forge meaningful connections and building lasting memories together. A few highlights from this past year include a House Cup competition, a trip to Shelburne Farms for apple picking, Jeopardy games, a Super Bowl Party and plenty of arts and crafts nights.!Look forward to a letter in late July from your Peer Leader introducing themselves, and meeting them when you arrive for the Fall semester.
For students interested in becoming a Peer Leader for Fall 2012, applications will be available in December 2011.
My name is Claudia Abbiati, I am a native Vermonter, and this Fall I will be a junior at the University of Vermont. I am majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders, as well as minoring in Linguistics and Philosophy. One of my favorite things to do is travel, and so last summer I went to Europe where I backpacked to different countries visiting relatives/friends. This summer I am substitute teaching/tutoring, as well as pioneering my first research project that focuses on the assessment of behavioral impacts of stuttering (Loved The King's Speech !). But during the school year you can usually find me at the Learning Co-op tutoring students, at one of the fascinating Linguistic Club presentations/meetings, or hanging out down at Muddy Waters (one of many great cafes in Burlington). I really enjoy listening to NPR's All Songs 24/7 Music, and my favorite flavor of Ben & Jerry's ice cream is Cherry Garcia. Please feel free to contact me at: Claudia.Abbiati@uvm.edu.

I'm a junior Political Science major and Art History minor who joined the Honors College as a sophomore. I'm originally from Cape Cod, MA and love iced coffee, writing for The Water Tower, and, of course, UVM. I'm excited to get to know a great group of first years and to show them how amazing life in Burlington is! Feel free to contact me at : email@example.com.
Hi! My name is Brittany Dooling, and I'm a student in the Rubenstein School. My majors are Environmental Studies and Ecological Agriculture. I'm from Bel Air, Maryland, a small town about an hour away from Baltimore. I absolutely love my hometown but decided to go to UVM because I love snow, the mountains, and Burlington. I am an avid runner and also like to hike, play soccer, bike, and do yoga. I am happiest when I'm doing anything outside! Currently I work on the student-run organic vegetable farm here at UVM, Common Ground, and love it. I am going to be working on an organic farm called Flying Plow at home this summer, and am so excited! My favorite part is vegetables, but I also love animals-cows, chickens, and horses. I can't wait to get to work with them more this summer. If you would like to talk to me about any of these things, or anything at all, don't hesitate to facebook me or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org! Can't wait to hear from you!
I am originally from Buffalo, NY. I am a sophomore in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, majoring in Community and International Development. My on-campus involvement includes my role as the Garden Coordinator for Campus Kitchens, a UVM club that accepts food donations and serves a weekly meal at the food shelf. This past summer, I went to Honduras with a group of UVM students to work on a watershed restoration project. I am currently interning at the Constructed Wetlands Research Center here at UVM.
In my free time, I enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. In the winter I try to get out to the mountains to go snowboarding as much as possible. In the summer, I go camping and hiking frequently. Feel free to email me at: Tom.Gebhard@uvm.edu.
Hi! My name is Mara Hale. I am a sophomore at the University of Vermont. I'm from a small town in Wisconsin about 20 miles north of Milwaukee. I love everything Wisconsin. I am a HUGE Packers fan; my favorite players are Donald Driver and Clay Matthews. I also absolutely love the Bucks, (even though they are pretty terrible) and my favorite player is Andrew Bogut. I have been playing soccer since I was four and in middle and high school played on a competitive traveling regional team. I play club soccer at UVM and absolutely love it! I also play tennis and like to swim and do yoga. I have been skiing my whole life, but now I prefer snowboarding and I snowboard all winter here. It's nice to finally live in a place where the biggest ski hill is not an old landfill. I enjoy working with special education students and I am in the process of learning American Sign Language; I hope to use my major to continue working with deaf, hard of hearing, and special education students. I am a communication sciences and disorders major with a minor in Spanish and I hope to add a second minor of special education. I want to go to graduate school and become a speech pathologist. Feel free to facebook creep me or send me an e-mail at email@example.com !
Hello, my name is Sam Kazman and I am from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. First of all, I would like to say that I am a friendly person who loves taking part in any type of conversation and meeting new people. I came to the University of Vermont because I thought that it would suit my personality (and it has indeed) and because it has a wide range of academic and extracurricular pursuits that fit my interests. At UVM, I have involved myself in many different pursuits from squash to kayaking to snowboarding and many others. I went to many of the hockey and basketball games this year and I thoroughly enjoyed myself in that spirited atmosphere. Although many of my extra-curricular activities involve sports of some kind, I also enjoy non-athletic pursuits like discussing public policy or academic subjects that interest me. Overall, I think that I am a well-rounded person who can be happy doing almost anything, as long as I am not doing one thing for too long. Contact me at: Samuel.Kazman@uvm.edu.
Welcome first years! My name is Tabatha Leahy, and I am from Saranac Lake, New York. I am a senior this year, studying psychology and nutrition food sciences. On campus, I enjoy writing for the Vermont Cynic, I am a member of the Peer Conduct Board, an undergraduate teaching fellow for General Psychology, and was a part of the peer-mentoring program last year. I will be completing my thesis on students' long-term memory and the various impacts associated with anxiety and exercise with Dr. Rudiger and Dr. Falls. Outside of school, I enjoy alpine skiing, running, and tanning. I love Church Street, iced coffee, the color pink, Dave Matthews Band, and any reality TV show focused on New Jersey (i.e. The Real Housewives of New Jersey and Jersey Shore). I've loved my time at UVM and cannot believe how fast the time has flown. I am beyond excited to be a part of this years Peer Leader program. Feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or find me on Facebook!
I am from Richmond, Vermont, which is about twenty minutes south of Burlington. My major is Secondary English Education, with a Special Education minor. I love singing, and am a member of the newest a cappella group, UVM Zest. Reading, hiking, camping, and cooking are also favorite activities of mine. In the spring I studied abroad at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand where I had the good fortune to travel, tramp, and experience kiwi culture. This summer I will resume working as a tour guide at the Ben and Jerry's Factory Tour in Waterbury, Vermont. Contact me at Melissa.Lawler@uvm.edu.
Currently I'm entering my junior year at UVM, with a Latin and Italian double major, two languages I've really enjoyed since high school and which complement each other very well. My first two years here I spent in the Living and Learning center, first in the Integrated Humanities Program for first year students, and then in the Pottery Program. For this upcoming year, I've created a new program with a friend concerning the humanities. Outside of my studies in foreign languages, I love reading and discussing all sorts of material with friends. If I can fit it in, I also like to write, paint, and throw pottery, hobbies I've kept up for a long time. As an added note, ever since a foreign exchange in high school, I also really enjoy cooking (and eating) Italian cuisine! Contact me at: Matthew.Mason@uvm.edu
I am a sophomore from Manchester, Massachusetts. I am majoring in both French and Religion because I have fun studying these two subjects. I play with the club ultimate frisbee team and the club squash team. I love to cook and one of my favorite pastimes at school is cooking a nice dinner right here in UHN. I love food, friends, frisbee, squash, skiing, and sailing. Needless to say, I am very happy to be here in Burlington. Feel free to email me at: Andrew.D.McCue@uvm.edu
I'm a sophomore at UVM, hailing from the small seaside town of Falmouth, Maine majoring in elementary education with a concentration in English. I am part of The Cynic, UVM's student-run newspaper, enjoy singing in the University Concert Choir and am incredibly excited to be a peer leader as part of the Honors College this semester. In my spare time I enjoy biking, dancing, reading, exploring, listening to music, arts & crafts and eating! On the weekends, you can usually find me at a local music venue swaying to the beat, or down by the waterfront soaking up the sun. If you have any questions, you can email me at email@example.com.
Federica "Fed" Wade
Hi all! I'm originally from Vicenza, Italy and I'm pursuing an Environmental Studies major with a concentration in Policy and Development in the Rubenstein School. I'm an Eco-Rep for the Office of Sustainability, member of the Multiracial Student Group, and was a First Year Mentor for the Honors College in 2010. I'm excited for this upcoming year! My name is Mike Wood, and I'm a sophomore at UVM with a double major in Sociology and French. I originally hail from the speck-on-the-map town of Andover, CT. Throughout high school, I was part of a community-building youth group that had a lot of the same aims that the Peer Leader program has. I really like playing and listening to music. I play drums and guitar and do a little singing, and I like rock, rap, reggae, jazz, acoustic, folk, and pretty much anything that has a creative sound. I also love being in nature, taking bike rides, chilling out by streams and lakes, and so on. I think that learning about other people's lives and cultures is really interesting, so be sure to talk to me about that. I can't wait to meet all you and I hope you have a wonderful experience at UVM. Contact me at: Michael.Wood.firstname.lastname@example.org.
My name is Audrey Woods and I like running, reading, watching TV shows and movies, writing, hiking, swimming, skiing, and being outdoors. I am way into the TV shows Fringe, Firefly, Castle, and Friends. For music, I listen to scores mostly, but I also like relaxing music like Ingrid Michaelson and Owl City. My favorite books are Harry Potter, Rescue Josh McGuire, the Black Jewels Trilogy, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Golden Compass series, but I'm open to just about anything.
I came to UVM because I liked the atmosphere and the surrounding landscape and I'm way into science. I'm currently a Molecular Genetics major with a Microbiology minor and a possible Chemistry minor (sounds much worse than it is). I'm involved in the Ski and Snowboard club, which eats up most of my free time in the winters, and I also like to go to the Catholic Center to get away and relax. A few fun facts about me are that I am half Cuban and I've been struck by lightning. If you want to know more, feel free to ask! My email: email@example.com
