Spring 2012 Scholarship and Fellowship Winners

Honors College Junior Susan Leggett Named a Goldwater Scholar

Susan Leggett

Honors College student and biochemistry major Susan Leggett, a UVM junior, has been awarded a 2012 Goldwater Scholarship, a highly competitive award that recognizes sophomores and juniors who have done outstanding work in science, math, or engineering and seek to become researchers and leaders in their disciplines. Mechanical engineering major David Bernstein '13 and Honors College student and biochemistry major Kanita Chaudhry '13 were also acknowledged by the Goldwater Scholarship Foundation with Honorable Mention in the 2012 competition.

This is the first time that three UVM students have been acknowledged in the competition in a single year. Read more

Reader '13 Named a Truman Scholar

Brent Reader

Social work major Brent Reader, a UVM junior, has been named a 2012 Truman Scholar. He is one of 55 students this year to win the highly competitive national award, which recognizes outstanding students who want to make a difference in public service. Two other UVM students were chosen as finalists for this year's Truman award: Alma Arteaga '13, an economics and environmental studies double-major from Keene, N.H. and Eliza Kelsten '13, a political science and history double-major from New Albany, Ohio.

Cooke '14 Named a Udall Scholar

UVM student Tad Cooke '14 has been named a 2012 Udall Scholar. This nationally competitive scholarship acknowledges sophomores and juniors who have been outstanding leaders and who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom. It is the most prestigious undergraduate award available for students who are pursuing careers focused on environmental or Native American issues.

Honors College Sophomore Erin Kerr Named a Boren Scholar

Boren Scholar

Erin Kerr, an Honors College sophomore and geography major, has been awarded a Boren Scholarship to participate in the Peace and Conflict Studies program through the School of International Training in the spring of 2013. Two other UVM students were recognized in the 2012-2013 Boren competition. Hannah Gibson '14, a double Russian and Sociology major, was named a finalist and placed on the alternate list for study in St. Petersburg, Russia during the spring 2013 semester. Jeremiah Rozman '14, a Political Science major, was also named a finalist and placed on the alternate list for study in Amman, Jordan during the 2012-2013 academic year.

Four UVM Students Receive Fulbright Fellowships

Three University of Vermont students and a recent alumnus have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program Scholarships. The prestigious awards are fully funded, year-long academic fellowships which enable seniors, recent graduates and graduate students who have an outstanding academic record to live abroad and conduct research or teach English as part of an intellectual and cultural exchange.
