UVM Homecoming & Family Weekend Preview - September 30 - October 3, 2010

Homecoming

Homecoming weekend, September 30-October 3, is a celebration for the entire UVM community. As Honors College alumni, parents, supporters and current students converge on Burlington for one weekend, it's good to remember that there's plenty going on beyond the walls of University Heights North.

The current forecast for Homecoming Weekend is sunny and cool, which makes for great weather to experience fall in Vermont. On Saturday, enjoy coffee with Honors College students, staff and Dean Abu Rizvi (8:30, University Heights North) before heading to the Honors College Alumni Panel (9:30, Lafayette 108). Hear recent Honors College alums share their stories from the working world as well as from graduate and professional school. Then head toward the Homecoming Harvest Festival, which will offer the best of Burlington with plenty of music, food and crafts. The festival will take place between the library and the Davis Center. Several sports teams will also be playing on campus during the weekend (see the athletics website for details). And for the more nautically inclined, the university will be running scenic boat cruises on Lake Champlain throughout the weekend.

In addition to the outdoor activities, homecoming attendees can choose to attend several lectures or performances on campus. On Thursday, Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of "Washington Week," senior correspondant and co-anchor for "PBS NewsHour," and the moderator for the 2008 Vice Presidential debate will keynote the George D. Aiken Lecture. Her speech, "Politics, Policy and Reality from Washington to Vermont and Beyond," will be followed up on Friday by a panel discussion consisting of faculty from UVM Political Science, English and other departments.

There will also be opportunities to peruse the Fleming Museum's current exhibitions, including Christo and Jeanne-Claude: The Tom Golden Collection, Samurai Artifacts from the Fleming Museum's Collections, and Metal. UVM Theatre will put on two performances of Cloud 9 in the Royall Theatre (Friday and Saturday night). The university's jazz ensemble, orchestra, concert band and choir will perform Thursday night, Heinavanker (an Estonian vocal music group) will perform Friday night as part of the Lane Series, and a capella groups will be performing Saturday evening.
