National Trust for Historic Preservation

Position: Director, Modern + Recent Past Initiative
Type: Professional Opportunity
Location: San Francisco, CA

Background on the Modernism + Recent Past (M+RP) Initiative:

Across the United States and around the globe, the cultural and aesthetic legacy of the Modern movement has emerged as one of the most pressing and complex issues in heritage conservation. Equally challenging is the question of how to preserve the more inclusively defined places of the recent past, that heritage spanning the cultural, intellectual, social, technological, and artistic revolutions of the Twentieth Century. Threats to Twentieth-Century architectural and cultural heritage stem from various sources, but include: lack of public understanding for these places' architectural significance and historic value; lack of supportive federal, state, and local policies; and lack of a coordinated preservation advocacy network.

For decades, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has supported local efforts to save significant M+RP places and provided strong stewardship of the Modern icons it holds as Historic Sites. The National Trusts Board of Trustees ranks the preservation of architectural and cultural resources of the recent past as one of the organization's highest priorities, and we are now formalizing and strengthening our activities through a four-year Modernism + Recent Past (M+RP) Initiative. Learn more.

Job Summary:

The National Trusts vision is to create a national infrastructure for a growing network of preservation, cultural, and community leaders, lead the development of a focused agenda, and provide this growing network of local groups with the tools and technical resources they need to protect and preserve the nations threatened M+RP resources.

The M+RP Initiative will be coordinated by a dedicated Program Director, based at our Western Office in San Francisco. Reporting to the Regional Director, the Program Director will join a small band of dedicated, collegial staff at the Western Office in San Francisco, and a larger team of National Trust employees and partners across the nation, and in particular coordinate closely with the staff of the Center for Modernism at the National Trusts Philip Johnson Glass House in New Canaan, CT. This individual will spearhead and implement the M+RP Initiative, will represent the National Trust in the national preservation community, and forge, maintain, and nurture partnerships with individuals, groups, and institutions.

This position will begin as a 2 year grant funded position, full time, with benefits.

Duties:

· Work closely with National Trust colleagues and partners to complete the key goals of the M+RP Initiative, summarized here:

- Engage national and local partner organizations, determine shared policy agenda, and establish a strong national network to strengthen partners work.

- Provide high-quality tools: educational programming, technical resources, and research to help partners save, maintain, and reuse resources.

- Use network to advance shared policy agenda and integrate into Sustainability Initiative.

- Engage individuals and targeted audiences across the country in M+RP issues.

- Create and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that raises public awareness and galvanizes support for M+RP advocacy.

· Take the regional and national helm on key issues providing direct preservation assistance to constituencies to save resources of the Recent Past era and Modernist Movement via field work, correspondence, public presentations, and testimonies and participate in relevant workshops, seminars, and conferences.
· Serve as the staff lead on the outreach, structure, and awarding of the M+RP Preservation Fund grant program.
· Serve as part of collaborative regional team to deliver high quality National Trust programming, including preservation services, grants and loans, special national programs and demonstration projects.
· Represent the National Trust and serve as liaison with government agencies, state historic preservation offices, statewide organizations, Trust advisors, local organizations and other constituents.
· In coordination with the Regional Director, Development Department, and Sites Department, identify and pursue new opportunities to increase the National Trusts presence and relevance in the region, including fund-raising opportunities.

Qualification:

The ideal candidate should be a highly recognized and effective contributor and participant in the efforts to save resources of M+RP and to the preservation field writ large. S/he will be able to build consensus and work at multiple levels with partners, stakeholders, constituents and be a broad-ranging, innovative, and strategic thinker who enjoys working in a variety of contexts and environments. S/he will possess the ability, for instance, to think about the changing nature of the paradigms that have traditionally shaped historic preservation and simultaneously have the capacity to work at the institutional level.

· · This position requires a minimum of five years experience in historic preservation activities with a majority of those years involved heavily in working with M+RP resource protection, preferably in the United States and in the Western states thereof.
· An undergraduate degree in historic preservation, urban planning, history, architecture, humanities, ethnic studies, environmental studies, or related field is mandatory; and a similarly related graduate or professional degree is strongly preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience reflecting a practical, theoretical and technical knowledge of preservation issues can substitute for a graduate degree.
· Well-honed written and oral communications skills and experience and confidence in public speaking are also a prerequisite.
· A willingness and ability to travel throughout the region and the nation is essential, as is a willingness to participate in fundraising for the M+RP Initiative.
