Under the supervision of the Director and Deputy Director of Preservation, reviews applications to restore,

conducts site visits, makes presentations to Commission at public hearings and public meetings, prepares
and issues permits for changes that the Commission has found to be appropriate. Provides technical
assistance to owners. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. A Masters Degree in historic preservation, architectural history, art history, architecture, or American
history, and one year of full-time experience working in the field of preservation, restoration, or
conservation of historic structures; or
2. A Bachelors of Arts Degree with specialization in one of the fields listed above, and two years of fulltime
related experience; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to 1 & 2 above.

The Master of Science in Historic Preservation Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago seeks a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty member to teach in one of the nation's leading Master of Science in Historic Preservation degree programs. The program offers course in the disciplinary areas of architectural design, history, planning and materials conservation.

Responsibilities: Teaching requirements include architectural documentation and/or design, materials conservation and the research and writing of landmark nominations.

Qualifications: The successful applicant is an architect with practical experience in historic preservation projects. A degree in architecture and teaching experience is expected and a degree in historic preservation is preferred. The Massachusetts Highway Department has posted positions for two (2) Cultural Resources Specialists. The selected applicants for these positions will be assigned to the Cultural Resources Unit within the Environmental Section located in Boston HQ. They will primarily be involved in Accelerated Bridge Program (ABP) activities and will be responsible for conducting architectural surveys, performing historic documentary research; preparing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Chapter 254 of the Massachusetts General Laws documentation; and coordinating activities between Federal, State and local agencies to ensure compliance with Federal/State laws and regulations and established project deadlines. Duties involve identifying historic properties within a project area; evaluating the National Register eligibility of properties within the area and preparing written recommendations with documentation for each significant property; evaluating and preparing written documentation describing potential effects of a project on listed National Register and/or eligible properties; and performing related work as required.

Field Representative of Virginia, APVA Preservation Virginia

Position: Full time, Richmond Virginia

Job Description: The field representative will be employed by APVA and will represent both the statewide organization and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to deliver direct field services to Virginia communities and organizations in the effort to support and strengthen historic preservation throughout the state.

Responsibilities will include: assessing local preservation needs, coordinating alliances, providing guidance on solution based strategies and a response plan for local issues, as well as a range of resources, and providing periodic monitoring of action and response. The field representative will coordinate and work with the state and regional offices of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. The field representative will be involved in the delivery of workshops responding to concerns and needs affecting multiple communities.

The position will be located in the APVA offices in Richmond. Travel to communities throughout the state will be required. (Some overnight travel will be required and for training outside of the state.) The field representative will report directly to the APVA Executive Director and be a part of the senior team that manages the APVA’s statewide mission.

Qualifications/Requirements: The successful candidate possesses excellent communication skills, the ability to handle multiple requests and demands, and public speaking skills, as well as the ability to develop strong working relationships with a wide range of constituencies. The candidate should have experience in the historic preservation field, creating networks, knowledge of the historic preservation strategies, experience in community development and interaction with community leaders. Related experience including planning, organizational development, real estate, funding/financing, and public policy is a plus.

The candidate should have a strong working knowledge of the preservation network in Virginia, as well as knowledge of planning, local and state regulations governing preservation issues. Computer proficiency required. An undergraduate degree is required, with a degree in preservation or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Salary Information: Salary commensurate with experience.

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources is actively recruiting for a Tax Credit Reviewer to conduct reviews for the State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit and Federal Certified Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit Programs.

Responsibilities: Provide technical assistance to resolve architectural problems; advises property owners; developers, and architects regarding appropriate rehabilitation treatments and application of the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Provides agency comments on applications according to agency and National Park Service regulations and procedures. Makes site inspections of rehabilitation projects as necessary and expedient to interpret program standards and guidelines; prepares inspection reports, written recommendations, and other documents as needed. Coordinates project reviews with other staff members and the National Park Service. Assists with the promotion of the tax credit programs through public workshops, presentations, publication, and site visits. Provides assistance with initiatives by the Office of Preservation Incentives to evaluate and improve internal processes, policies, and technology. ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN/PRESERVATION PLANNER

The Massachusetts Historical Commission, office of the State Historic Preservation Officer, is seeking an Architectural Historian/ Preservation Planner to work within its Technical Services Division. Job responsibilities include review of state and federal projects for effects on historic resources in compliance with state and federal legislation; review project applications for federal Investment Tax Credits and state historic rehabilitation tax credits; and the development and administration of programmatic historic building rehabilitation programs with local communities in compliance with federal historic preservation law.

Candidates should have a M.A. in Architectural History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation Studies, or a related field. Prior experience reviewing technical aspects of architectural plans and drawings is preferred. Some knowledge of Massachusetts history and architecture and familiarity with federal and state historic preservation law and regulations, the Secretary of Interior’s Standards, and the National Register of Historic Places are preferred. This position exists to direct the Colorado Historical Society’s historic preservation activities as
those activities apply to architectural resources. This position serves as the Director of the State
Historical Fund (SHF) grants program, oversees the Preservation Planning Unit, and provides

programs supervised by the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer for Archaeology. This

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Directly supervises Unit Heads in charge of all aspects of the SHF and Preservation
Planning Units, as well as positions providing administrative support to such units.
• Responsible for maintaining productive workflow patterns throughout the SHF and State
and National Register and Preservation Planning programs.
• Reviews and provides signature authority for architecture-related correspondence related to
other programs of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

least five years experience in increasingly responsible positions in historic preservation. Additional
comparable on-the-job experience can be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year
basis for up to three years. At least three years experience in a supervisory capacity over more than
two supervisory level employees is required. This position requires a detailed understanding of, and
practical experience applying, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic
Properties. A successful candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s qualification
requirements for Architectural History, Architecture, or Historic Architect. Experience working in
an advisory capacity with boards and with persons in political positions is preferred. A successful

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History, which functions as the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), seeks an architectural historian to assist in on-going work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Responsibilities will include assisting in the Section 106 review process of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966; reviewing and commenting on National Register-eligibility assessments submitted by federal and state agencies for Hurricane Katrina-related relief programs; consulting and assisting preservation specialists in reviewing architectural plans; preparing comments for and working with the Review and Compliance Section of the Historic Preservation Division; reviewing and coordinating survey documentation submitted by federal agencies as mitigation for adverse effects in the coastal areas; assisting a Database Analyst in the development of a GIS program for the Historic Preservation Division; and other responsibilities related to assisting local property owners and historic preservation commissions on the Coast.
Regular travel to the Coast for site visits and meetings will be required, and the ability to work both independently as as part of a team of six architectural historians is highly desired. Interaction with the public, and with federal, state, county and local public officials will be a normal part of the job. Incumbent will work under the administrative direction of the Chief Architectural Historian.

Education and experience must meet one of the following criteria:

Education Coordinator

The Boston Preservation Alliance is seeking a part-time education coordinator to implement our Neighborhood Preservation Workshop Program in communities throughout Boston. The Alliance, in conjunction with our sister organization, Historic Boston, Inc. has received a three-year grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to implement a new Field Services program of comprehensive outreach, education and project development guidance in Boston’s underserved neighborhoods. We are seeking a dynamic professional to lead the educational component of the program focused on Boston’s residential neighborhoods.

Responsibilities
Working closely with the Alliance’s Executive Director and an Advisory Committee, evaluate a two-year pilot program of workshops and revise curriculum based on lessons learned.
Manage all logistics and content development for at least six workshops per year aimed at bringing information and technical assistance concerning historic preservation to Boston’s underserved communities.
Maintain ongoing relationships with neighborhood-based organizations, city and state agencies and other groups that will participate in developing and presenting at workshops.
Work closely with staff at the Alliance and our sister organization, Historic Boston, Inc., to identify neighborhoods in need of assistance; coordinate activities closely with Historic Boston, Inc’s Historic Neighborhood Centers Program.
Develop supplemental print and web-based materials for workshop participants and the general public.
Field phone and email inquiries about the Alliance’s educational outreach in Boston’s neighborhoods.
Actively seek and manage local press coverage of workshops and related neighborhood outreach.
Assist Executive Director with ongoing grantwriting for continued program development.
Attend 2-3 training sessions per year sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, including the annual National Conference (to be held in Tulsa in October 2008).
Document and evaluate program successes and challenges and prepare annual reports in accordance with guidelines established by grantor(s).

Qualifications

Director of Historic Preservation & Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer

The Ohio Historical Society is seeking a highly experienced historic preservation professional to serve as Director of Historic Preservation & Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer (see attached complete position announcement). The position reports to the Deputy Executive Director and manages all operations of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, including 27 staff with a $1.7 million annual operating budget.

Position Summary

Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) and assume a leadership role, as a member of the executive management team, in the advancement of the organization’s strategic priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Demonstrate entrepreneurial leadership in developing short- and long-range plans for the OHPO, consistent with the institution’s strategic vision.
· Oversee the responsibilities of the state historic preservation office as outlined in the National Historic Preservation Act and relevant sections of the Ohio Revised Code, with
signatory authority for the SHPO.
· Establish and carry out an OHS standard of excellence for OHS historic preservation programs that is consistent throughout all programs and in each location.
· Supervise Society personnel ensuring overall compliance with OHS employment policies and procedures, defining job duties, establishing work goals, setting performance
standards, evaluating performance, and recommending the hire and promotion of staff.
· Develop and administer the operating budget for the division.
· Oversee the annual Historic Preservation Fund grant, including fulfillment of the annual work plan and reports and coordinating Ohio’s participation in Annual Advocacy Day in
Washington, D.C.
· Serve as Executive Secretary to the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board.
· Promote financial health of programs through increasing revenue generation.
· Cooperate with the Marketing Office on implementation of effective public relations and marketing activities.
· Cooperate with the Office of Institutional Advancement to identify grant opportunities; write, supervise, and/or assist in the preparation of grant applications as necessary.
· Pursue ways to expand institutional involvement to a variety of stakeholders and constituents. Address feedback or request from public and local communities and establish and
maintain an effective working relationship with the local communities.
· Cooperate with state offices and legislators, historic preservation organizations, academic institutions, public history organizations, and other potential institutional collaborators.
· Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The following units will report the Director of Historic Preservation & Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer: Education and Support Services, Inventory and Registration, Resource Protection and Review, and Technical Preservation Services. The Certified Local Government and Preservation Services Manager also reports directly to the DSHPO.

Education and/or Experience

Graduate degree in history, architecture, historic architecture, architectural history, archaeology or a closely related preservation field, or its equivalent in education and experience; alternately the applicant must meet the professional qualification standards in 36 CFR 61, Appendix A. An extensive working knowledge of federal and state historic preservation laws, regulations, and programs is required. A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible administration. Highly seasoned senior manager with demonstrated relevant experience in all or many of the areas of responsibility.

Responsibilities:  The Conservator will manage the Conservation Program at Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources. Primary duties include examination, documentation, and treatment of objects and collections; analytical testing and materials identification in a laboratory setting that supports wet chemical and instrumental analysis; preparing cost estimates; packaging and mounting artifacts for transport, storage or display; and submitting full reports of all activities. The Conservator will develop and maintain the inventory of conservation supplies and equipment as needed to support procedures. The Conservator will also consult, manage, budget, prioritize and ensure the timely completion of conservation projects. The Conservator should also be capable of evaluating and writing policy, guidance, and training materials to provide statewide conservation leadership to the archaeological community. The Conservator may also supervise temporary technicians and/or interns.

The Conservator supports all the activities of the State Archaeology and Collections Division including collections management, outreach and education. The Conservator functions as part of the large state historic preservation office and serves on interdisciplinary agency-wide teams. The Conservator must be able to work with and communicate effectively with the public as well as with other professionals. 

Qualifications:  Applicants must have a college degree in archaeology, anthropology or a related field. A master’s degree or equivalent training in conservation is required, preferably with a focus on archaeological materials. Additional practical conservation experience is desirable. Prior training in health and safety or hazmat management, close up color digital photography, light polarizing microscopy and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications will be considered bonuses.

Assist the Texas Historical Commission’s Architecture Division in the administration of the award winning Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP). Duties includes providing architectural preservation assistance, reviewing plans and specifications for modifications to historic county courthouses, consulting with county officials and their architectural consultants, and general courthouse grant program administration.

The Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program began with an initial appropriation of $50 million in 1999 by the Texas Legislature. Since its inception, the program has awarded $207 million to counties throughout Texas and to date over half of Texas’ 234 surviving historic county courthouses are participating in this state-run program. Pending additional funding from the Texas Legislature, the THC plans to continue the program with additional rounds of grant opportunities.

The Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program’s work has garnered national and international attention from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Association for Preservation Technology International and the Texas Society of Architects. On May 12, 2008, the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program received the Preserve America Presidential Award during a special White House ceremony.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking an Easement Administrator to manage the National Trust’s Easement Program, which includes over 100 easements around the country. The Easement Administrator will have the overall responsibility of administering the Easement Program, including working with the Law Department to develop or revise easement policies, evaluating new easement properties, regularly inspecting easement properties, and serving as the primary representative of the National Trust for communication with easement property owners.

Through the development and implementation of policies and procedures and the centralization of easement records, the Easement Administrator will streamline the overall management of the program. The Easement Administrator will also work closely with the National Trust regional offices, Statewide and Local Partners, and consultants to develop and implement easement monitoring agreements around the country. The Easement Administrator will work directly with the National Trust’s Law Department to address requests for changes or alterations, easement violations, and enforcement actions.  Finally, the Easement Administrator will assist with public outreach activities relating to historic preservation easements, including educational programs to promote good easement stewardship practices.

The Preservation Project Manager is responsible for the day to day management of preservation projects at the museum properties of Historic New England.  The Historic New England property collection spans four centuries and five New England states and is comprised of 15 National Historic Landmark sites and 28 National Register sites.  The Preservation Project Manager will work as part of the property care team to complete projects as assigned.  Historic New England has been a leader in establishing preservation philosophy, standards and methods, and continues to provide models of historic preservation for preservation professionals, organizations and the public.  The Preservation Project Manager is the keeper of the Historic New England philosophy as it is applied to their assigned projects. The Preservation Project Manager is responsible for project scope development, creation and dissemination of bid documents, coordination with contractors and staff, weekly status reports and project documentation, completion reports and other paperwork.  The total number of projects assigned will be determined by project scope, work load considerations and the requirements of funding.  The Preservation Project Manager is responsible for coordinating their work within the property care team and also with other Historic New England teams. This includes working closely with preservation managers, collection staff and historic site managers who oversee day-to-day operation of the properties.

Responsibilities: Become familiar with Historic New England’s preservation philosophy and the procedures and requirements of project management established by Historic New England and the granting agencies.  Familiarize oneself with site history and history of repairs at project site.  Develop treatment plans for proposed projects.  Coordinate as necessary with architect/engineer for creation of specifications for the project items.  Draft bid documents for all project components and coordinate bid process and bid review.  Coordinate with all necessary teams in regards to scope of the project and impact of the project with tenants, staff, the landscape, building and collections, and the public.  Oversee projects, including status meetings with the site manager, preservation manager and team leader for property care.  Produce written documents including weekly written status reports, written minutes from contractor meetings, project reports and a completion report for each project to conform to property care standards and the standards of the funding agencies.  Produce, label and properly store photographs documenting all phases of the project to conform to property care standards and the standards of the granting agencies.  Manage paperwork required for granting agencies and ensure timely compliance with all requirements.  Writes internal documents, articles and makes public presentations related to Historic New England property care and projects and develops outreach programs on preservation issues.  Serves on task forces and committees as assigned, both specific to expertise and in support of organizational priorities.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Develops and administers the work plan for the City’s historic preservation program, including regulatory, planning, educational and training functions; Provides technical assistance and administrative support to the Commission on Architecture and Urban Design (CAUD), including designation and design review as set forth in the CAUD manual and the state and federal standards; Provides technical assistance to owners of historic and architecturally significant properties; Provides technical assistance to the Planning, Housing and Community Development Department and other City offices with required state and federal project reviews, state and local environmental reviews and with the prevention treatment of historic and architecturally significant City facilities; Creates/maintains a data base of all properties within the city designated within the City historic districts and listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places; Maintains and updates official maps of local historic districts; Prepares annual report of historic preservation activities as required by the New York State Certified Local Government Program and works with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) on ongoing projects; Acts as the City’s representative at meetings with federal and state officials on design and implementation of the City’s historic preservation programs and projects; Coordinates and conducts neighborhood based participatory planning process and supervises preparation of neighborhood plans; Serves as liaison to City Hall for neighborhood groups with projects and activities such as playground improvements, development of recreational facilities, protection of neighborhood character and neighborhood stabilization; Acts as lead or support staff for City projects pertaining to land use, housing, accessibility, urban design and other areas of planning, including coordination with other departments, boards, committees and agencies; Researches, prepares applications and administers state, federal and regional grants;  Serves on Susquehanna Heritage Area commission as assigned; Performs miscellaneous office work and maintains records of work activities.
