Window Repair Strategies

Sash- repair or replace decayed or broken rails, muntins, stiles as required

- duplicate molding profiles, dimensions, species, joinery

Glass - replace broken & missing panes (maybe replace cracked glass)

Putty - replace missing and deteriorated putty (if more than 1/3 poor, consider replacing all)

Paint - refinish deteriorated coatings to protect wood & putty, slightly lap paint onto glass to obtain seal

Balance system - replace broken or frayed sash cord

Functionality - remove excess paint from sash sides, frames, parting beads

- plane only if necessary to relieve structural changes

- coat bare wood with wax or clear sealant

- adjust locks & latches

- open weep holes at outside sill

Sills- refinish to keep out moisture

- heavy checking or decay may require consolidation and filling prior to painting, in extreme cases sill may require replacement

Interior sash

weather strip to insure tight seal to inside, heated air

Storm windows

inspect & repair to improve functionality

exterior - (little infiltration, positive drainage)

interior - tight air seal ( allow outside sash to breathe)

Replacements

only if missing or beyond repair

match dimensions, design, molding profiles
