Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Frank Zelko earned a doctorate in environmental history from the University of Kansas in 2003. After a year as a postdoctoral fellow in environmental history at the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC, he spent two and a half years as a faculty member in the history department at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. While Queensland ’s sub-tropical splendor had its charms, the constant danger of falling mangos and avocados prompted him to seek the safer and more bracing environment of New England, and he arrived on the shores of Lake Champlain in January of 2007. In addition to an introductory course in global environmental history, Zelko is teaching a seminar in North American environmental history. In future, he plans to offer courses on the history of environmentalism and the history of ideas about nature. Zelko’s research focuses on the history of environmental movements. He has published work on environmental activism in the US, Canada, Germany and Australia, and his book on the history of the international environmental organization, Greenpeace, will be published shortly. He is also editing a volume on the environmental history of the world’s oceans.
