UVM Career: Assistant Professor (1969 - 1974); Associate Professor (1974-1978); Professor (1978 - 2003).
Publication Highlights: Writer's Guide: History, with Mary Jane Dickerson,(1987); James Prescott Joule and the Concept of Energy, (1979); The History of Science in Western Civilization. 3 Vols., with L.P.Williams, (1978); The Development of Newtonian Optics in England, (1977); Science, Technology and Culture, with H. N. Muller, III, (1974). Numerous articles and book chapters related to using writing to teach and learn.
Teaching/Research/Memberships: Member of the History of Science Society's Committee on Education, 1988-1996. Responsible for Syllabus Sampler II, (2001); Topical Essays for Teachers, (1995); Syllabus Sampler, (1993). These works were published by the Society for the improvement of the teaching the history of science at all levels.
Other Professional Experience: Over 50 workshops and keynote addresses at Universities, Colleges, and High Schools across the USA, and as far away as Jakarta, Indonesia, devoted to the uses of writing to teach and learn.
Awards and Honors: Service as a Captain in the US Army, 1967-1969.
Community Service: Consultant and workshop leader for the Vermont Department of Education for the revision of the Vermont State Standards in History and Social Studies. Contributed to the preparation of the Vermont Teachers Resource Guide, designed to help teachers implement the revised standards. Co-director of Essex Youth Wrestling Program, Essex Junction, VT, 1983-1992.
