Melanie Gustafson is an Associate Professor in the Department of History. She is also an affiliated faculty member in the Women's and Gender Studies Program. Her teaching areas include United States history and American women’s history.
Her scholarly work has focused on women and political parties in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. She is the author of Women and the Republican Party, 1854-1924, available from the University of Illinois Press http://www.press.uillinois.edu/f01/gustafson.html.
Her co-edited anthology, We Have Come to Stay: American Women and Political Parties, 1880-1960, was published by the University of New Mexico Press and she is now a series editor of UNM Press's new American Women's Biography series. She is also the author of the American Historical Association's Becoming a Historian: A Survival Manual for Women and Men.
Melanie Gustafson has presented talks on her work to both academic audiences and community groups. She is an Associate of Clio, Inc., a new media company, which produced the film documentary, Miss America. Professor Gustafson spent the last decade serving on the Vermont Advisory Committee of the United States Civil Rights Commission and continues to be involved in local and national professional and community organizations.
She is currently working on a biography of the woman suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony.
