Ariel Beaujot joined the University of Vermont in 2010 as a Visiting Assistant Professor, and Postdoctoral Fellow (funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada). She earned her degrees from the University of Western Ontario (B.A., 2001) and the University of Toronto (Ph.D., 2008). Her teaching and research interests include class formation, gender, race, and colonialism, with an emphasis on material culture. She researches in particular the ways in which objects reveal the values, attitudes, assumptions, and ideas of Victorian men and women in Britain.
Beaujot's current scholarly work uncover the ways that male accessories reflected (and sometimes helped to create) wider societal developments in areas of gender, labour, identity politics, race, and democracy in Britain. She discusses how hats, pocket watches, canes, and smoking paraphernalia were the props that formed the basis of customs specific to the Victorian era, and how they helped shape social relationships. Beaujot has published articles in Material Women: Consuming Desires and Consuming Objects and Producing Fashion: Commerce, Culture, and Consumers, and, Oral History Forum and her first book Victorian Fashion Accessories: The Material Culture of Objects in Victorian and Edwardian Britain will soon come out with Berg Publishers. Beaujot is an active member of the Canadian Historical Association, the North American Victorian Studies Association, and the Canadian Oral History Association. In addition to regular travel to Europe for research and teaching Beaujot enjoys visiting museums, making quilts, and running.
