UVM HERS Institute Program

How to Apply for the 2018-2019 Program

Please do not submit your application directly to HERS.

To be considered for the HERS program through UVM, and receive the funding subsidy, you will need to submit a document that includes background information, two letters of recommendation and two short essays. Please submit a single email to develop@uvm.edu that includes the following information:

  • Letter of Interest/Cover Letter detailing why you should be considered for the HERS program.
  • Resume/CV.
  • Organizational Chart with your position indicated on it.
  • Letter of recommendation from your direct supervisor and one from the President or a Senior Officer indicating their support for your attendance as well as your qualifications.
  • What are your professional objectives (Work and Leadership Expectations) in 1-2 years? When you attain this position, what are your goals or areas of focus (this must be a short answer, limited to 255 characters not words and includes spaces)
  • Work and Leadership Expectations in 3-5 years? When you attain this position, what are your goals or areas of focus (this must be a short answer, limited to 255 characters not words and includes spaces)
  • What are your professional objectives (Work and Leadership Expectations) in 10 years? When you attain this position, what are your goals or areas of focus (this must be a short answer, limited to 255 characters not words and includes spaces)
  • Which timeframe interests you the most right now?
  • Leadership Development Plan essay (pdf)
  • Leadership Project essay (pdf)

UVM Applications are due by 12:00 noon on Friday May 11, 2018.

UVM Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.

Selection Process

  • Applications are due to Professional Development and Training by noon on May 11, 2018
  • Former HERS participants will handle initial screening
  • Applications will be forwarded to the selection committee who will interview the top candidates and make a final selection

Selection Criteria

Alumnae of UVM's HERS program have developed a list of criteria to help ensure a good match between people and the program. These criteria include:

  • Length of employment and history of contributions to UVM
  • Potential for further contribution to UVM and/or higher education
  • Clarity of purpose
  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues
  • Ability to demonstrate how attendance at HERS will enhance your overall career plan

In addition, factors related to maintaining a good mix of faculty and staff representation will be considered.
