The Community Service Programs Office in the Department of Student Life coordinates one-time service events that are open to all members of the UVM community, service-based trips for incoming first-year students and advise student-led volunteer groups of the Volunteers in Action organization. Together we link the UVM community with the Burlington community. Our work specifically includes: UVM Serves - Each week the Community Service office sends out an email listing all the upcoming volunteer opportunities on and around campus. Anyone can sign up for this e-blast (students, faculty, staff, or community members). Join today by emailing Lluvia Mulvaney-Stanak at lmulvane[at]uvm.edu today! Community Service TREK(each August) - Each year, about 40 incoming first year students participate in a community-based orientation program that sends four week-long service trips to work with local non-profit agencies such as The Green Mountain Club, The Catamount Trail Association, and Habitat for Humanity. (more) Serve-a-thon (each September) - Each fall, hundreds of students volunteer for 15-25 non-profit agencies on projects ranging from yard work and trail maintenance to clean-up and painting. Some of the agencies include: The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), The Ronald McDonald House, Vermont Cares, and The Green Mountain Club. (more) Fill the Fireplace (each November) - Just before the holiday season, the UVM community comes together to collect items for local agencies' 'wish lists' keeping them stocked for the holidays. (more) Community Works 2008 (each April) - As part of 'National Youth Service Day' UVM students join for another community service project similar to the Fall Serve-a-thon. (more) Community Service TREK Each year we kick the year off a week before students return to campus with a special first-year experience for 30 new students here at UVM. We take students into the local community to volunteer and otherwise bond with other new students. This is a great way to connect with new students (as a new student) or to take on a leadership role in leading these trips as a TREK leader. For more information on any of these programs please contact Llu at lmulvane[at]uvm.edu Serve-a-thon 2007 (Coming Soon!) Fill the Fire Place 2007 (Coming Soon!) Community Works 2008 As part of 'National Youth Service Day' UVM students join for another community service project similar to the Fall Serve-a-thon. |
