Publish Web Pages at UVM:

Moving Files to Zoo:
Using FTP_Voyager

1. In Windows, open FTP_Voyager (if you don't have it, it is available at http://www.uvm.edu/software/ ). The opening screen will look something like this:

Image of FTP_Voyager login screen

In the left pane, click once on "WWW" to choose it. (1)
Make sure "WWW" appears in the Name box. (2)
Make sure the FTP Site says zoo.uvm.edu. (3)
The Anonymous Login box should NOT be checked. (4)
Type in your zoo userid (usually it's your first initial and first 7 letters of your last name). (5)
Type in your password. (6)
Click "Connect."

2. Voyager will connect to Zoo and show you a window similar to this one:

Let's explore this window:
(1) The path to your files on zoo
(2) Your public_html folder where all your web pages will be stored. Double click on it to make sure it is open (the folder will appear opened).
(3) The files and folders within your public_html folder. If you have published web pages in your account on zoo before you will see them here. If not, this pane will be empty.
(4) The folders on your local computer.
(5) The files within the chosen folder on your local computer. Note that in (4) the Desktop is the chosen (highlighted) location.
(6) Voyager provides a running commentary on FTP activities while in the program.

3. Don't see all the areas? Tell Voyager to show them to you. Go to View in the menu and make sure the Local Drives, Log Pane, and Transfer pane are checked.

4. Now let's move a file.

Find the file you wish to move.
Open the public_html folder and the sub-folder, if any, to which you wish to move the file.
(In this example I am moving the file named F497.GIF that is saved on my desktop. I want to move it to the sub-folder named "aatest" in my public_html folder on zoo.)
Click on the icon for the file, hold the mouse button down, drag the file up to the zoo pane, and drop.
Voyager makes a copy of the file in the zoo pane and leaves a copy of the file in its original location.

5. Check your web space to see if the file is OK:

Point Netscape or your favorite browser to the file. It will be at http://www.uvm.edu/~ your-account-name/filename
In this example, the file is in a sub-folder named aatest, so the address would be: http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/aatest/F497.GIF

That's it! You've moved your file to Zoo and is now published on the Web!

Things that might go wrong:

You start FTP_Voyager, login to zoo, move the file, then go to look for the file with your browser and you see this:
Image of "Forbidden" message

Zoo's normal behavior is to protect all your files so that no one but you can see them. This is good if it is a private file like an e-mail message. This is not so good if this is web pages--you want people to see it! If you did not choose the WWW name when you logged in to Voyager, or if you changed the file name once you moved it to zoo so that zoo thinks it is a new file, zoo sets your file so that it is "Forbidden" to see it with a browser.

You can use Voyager to re-set the permissions so that everyone can see the file.

1) Refresh the Voyager screen so it knows where the files are:
Right-Click on any blank area of the zoo pane (#3 in the image above). This pop-up menu will appear.

Voyager pop-up menu
Choose "Refresh" by left-clicking on it.

2) Left click once on the file that needs its permissions set to choose it.

3) Right-click on that file and this pop-up menu should appear.

4) Choose "Properties."  This dialog box should appear:
Voyager properties dialog box

5) Make sure all the "Read" boxes (1) are checked.
Make sure the only "Write" box that is checked is for you, the user. This means that only you can change or delete this file.
If the correct boxes are checked the "Numeric Value" box should say 644.
Click OK, then go to your browser and try the file again.

If the checkboxes are greyed out so that you cannot choose them, like this:

you didn't refresh the correct pane. Make sure you have clicked in the pane where your file is on zoo (should be the upper right pane) then repeat from #1 just above.
