John Dowland: Lachrimae
This clip is the first section from Dowland's most famous work. This lute
solo was later developed for four voices under the title "Flow my
tears." Dowland
studied throughout Europe with musicians and musical theorists, including
Luca Marenzio and Zarlino's pupil, Giovanni Croce. He did not fare well
with Elizabeth, however, being refused several possible appointments at
court. Whether from religious reasons, as he claimed, or due to some more
personal dissatisfaction on the part of the Queen, as many surmise, is
unknown.
