To be an effective learning tool, any educational strategy or technology must acknowledge the fundamental principles of human learning and memory. As an information processor the human mind has no equal. Yet, it has certain limitations and requirements. One commonly accepted theory regarding human learning is that of depth of processing - the premise that the more actively the learner associates new material with material already learned, the better the information will be retained and recalled. To facilitate the learners' ability to encode, store and retrieve information, educational technologies must accomodate these idiosyncracies. One such strategy is that of problem-based learning (PBL). In this presentation, the authors will discuss and demonstrate a WWW based case designed to employ PBL strategies in a world wide web environment.
