So:
Keep the FAQ in the right column as is--well it could be tightened up a bit, and the link referring to the answer about AIM is easy to miss

Welcome to UVM.

We practice safe computing!

Before you use your computer on the UVM network this semester, we're going to help you:
(I would actually do these as colorful text images, not text)
update your
security software

update your
anti-virus software
remember UVM's
computer use
policies
register your computer so you can access ALL UVM
 network features

Here we go:

Step 1: Security Updates

Viruses, worms, infections: get the latest security updates to protect your computer.

Click on your operating system:

     Windows         Apple         Other

Previous      (No Next button--put it in the Screen 2A or 2B or 2C)

---------------------------

Screen 2A:

Windows Security Update

(provide briefest instructions, no extra explanations about why)

---------------------------
Screen 2B:

If you are running MacOS X:

   1. Choose Apple menu > Software Update. The Software Update window opens. If there are any updates available, they appear in a list.
   2. Click the checkbox to select the items you want to install, then click Install. Type an administrator name and password (the name and password you used when you first set up your computer--NOT your UVM NetID).

When the updates complete, Software Update checks for updates again. It does this because some updates require that you have installed previous updates.

Periodically, Apple releases free updates to your computer's software. You can check for updates manually or set your computer to check for updates.

If you are running MacOS 9:

Enter the Software Updates panel:

   1. Choose Apple Menu > Control Panel.
   2. In the Control Panel, double-click the Software Update icon ( ).

When you're done, return to this window and

Move on to the next step .
(Make "next step" an icon/button to match other pages, for consistency

Step 2: Free Symantic Antivirus Software

Did you purchase your computer from the Depot this fall?

You already have the latest version. Click "Next" to go on.

Did you purchase your computer elsewhere or are you a returning student?

Get the latest version (Symantec Antivirus 9.0) from UVM's free software download page  (link to page)

Step 3: Computer and Network Use Policy

When you activated your netID you agreed to be a responsible UVM network
citizen. Want to review the key points? See below.

Put the key points here, then the link to the whole thing. Or, abbreviate the ky points in one or two words in a yes/no table

(The main idea is to just remind people that there is an agreement. If they choose to read it, all the better)
