Ten years later, he returned to Warsaw to win the top prize, the People’s Prize, and the Polonaise Prize. Since then, he has won critical and audience acclaim throughout the world and is known as one of the great interpreters of Chopin, “fulfilling a criterion which one only knows from great Chopinists such as Rubinstein, Benedetti-Michelangeli and Dinu Lipatti.” (Schwaebishe Zeitung, Germany) For us, he will perform works by Debussy, Liszt, Ravel, Janaçek, Rorem, and of course, Chopin (24 Preludes). Recognized for its virtuosity and exuberant performance style, the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet was Musical America’s 2009 Ensemble of the Year. Shortly after its 1994 formation, the Pacifica won the coveted Naumburg Prize, and has since received many honors. Recently, the Quartet presented the monumental Shostakovich cycle in Chicago and New York and the complete Beethoven cycle at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall in an unprecedented presentation of five concerts in three days. This past season, they performed the Shostakovich cycle at London’s Wigmore Hall and the Beethoven cycle at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. No hyperbole intended: they are simply one of the world’s best chamber music ensembles performing today. On the Lane Series, they will play Haydn’s Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 76, No. 4, “Sunrise”; Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 2; and Beethoven’s Quartet in A minor, Op. 132.

The Hot Club of San Francisco performs French Gypsy Jazz in the intricate style of guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli of the original Hot Club de France. Since their performance on the Lane Series over five years ago, we’ve been hankering to have them back: students and faculty are still talking about their incredible jazz guitar workshop we hosted as part of that visit. Django and Stephane may have invented the style, but the HCSF keeps it alive for a modern audience!

Traditional vocal world music has always been a favorite genre for the Lane Series audience. So when Aoife Clancy, the former vocalist of Cherish the Ladies and a singer we’ve always greatly admired, called to tell us about her new group, we were delighted to bring them to our hall. Four stunning female vocalists/instrumentalists from Ireland (Aoife), the US (Becky Chace), Australia (Kath Buckell), and Israel (Hadar Noiberg) come together to perform traditional and original music from their diverse cultures. Each is a noted artist in her own right; together, their voices blend into exquisite harmonies.
