Background and
Rationale
The core mission of the research
university is the creation
and sharing of knowledge. The University of Vermont traditionally has
promoted
student research as central to its academic mission, and a vital part
of the
educational experience. The Student Research Conference serves as a one-day forum where graduate student
research
conducted in UVM colleges, schools, divisions, and departments will be
shared
with the wider community.
Students
will present their research projects in either a
poster or oral presentation format.
Poster
Presentations
Most students will
present a poster describing their
research findings. In each poster session, students will display a
visual
representation of their research and explain their work to other
conference
participants and attendees. Additional information can be found at:
http://www.uvm.edu/~uvmsrc/poster_prep.pdf
Oral Presentations
A limited number of
students will be chosen, based on accessibility and appeal to a public lay audience, to give 15-minute oral presentations..
Graduate
student oral presentations will be selected by the Research Day
Committee of
the Graduate Student Senate.
Benefits of
Participation
Student participants will gain
valuable experience in
creating a poster or research talk and communicating research to
members of the
UVM community. Preparing a poster or research talk will provide
excellent
preparation for a graduate or professional school or professional work
environments. Conference participation can be noted on graduate school
or job
applications.
Student participants will serve as a
resource for other UVM
students who are not yet involved in research projects, and who wish to
learn
more about research opportunities at the University.
Student participants and their faculty
mentors will be part
of a forum that will encourage and foster interdisciplinary interaction
across
disciplines, colleges, and schools.
Student Eligibility
All UVM graduate students
who are conducting a research or
creative project under the supervision of a UVM faculty member are
eligible to
present their current or recent work at the Conference.
This includes graduate
students conducting research or
creative work as part of academic program requirements, or those
working on
other independent research projects.
Research and creative projects at any stage of completion
are welcome,
including projects under development that have not attained final
results.
Students may offer presentations of initial results, research project
designs,
field experiences, discussions of methodology or literature reviews, or
completed work.
