Veronica Richel came to the University of Vermont as an Assistant Professor of German in 1969. She earned her Ph.D. degree at Yale University in 1968, and had taught at the College of William and Mary and the Yale University Summer Language School before coming to UVM. Prof. Richel retired from the University of Vermont in May 1997 after almost 30 years in the Department of German and Russian. Since her retirement, she has kept very active and engaged through studying music and the Italian language at UVM and enjoying numerous and varied international travel experiences.

While at UVM her teaching and research interests included the German drama, Goethe's Faust, Brecht and the modern theater, and course offerings in German Literature in Translation [such as "Faust Through the Ages"]. One of her major publications was The German Stage, 1767-1890: A Directory of Playwrights and Plays (1988). She was the founding director of the Living/Learning Center's German House Program, and was especially appreciated as an excellent advisor to undergraduate students.
