Global Studies Scholar Award

The winner of this year’s award is Sammie Ibrahim. Ms. Ibrahim is a triple major in Global Studies, Geography and Political Science with a minor in Russian. She is currently completing an Honors Thesis on the politics of refugee resettlement in the US and has had a storied career at UVM. She is a past recipient of a Simon Family Public Research Fellowship to carry out work on local mobilities, a nationally competitive Boren Fellowship to conduct intensive language study in Kyrgyzstan, a Critical Language Scholarship to study in Russia, and is currently contemplating choosing from a number of different international options post-graduation including Princeton-in-Africa. She has undertaken several internships including with the UN, SSG Advisors, and several DC-based firms. At UVM she is a past president of Amnesty International, has worked as a research assistant on faculty projects dealing with refugee resettlement as well as campus greening and sustainability efforts, and as a teaching assistant for courses on race and ethnicity in the US as well as on international environmental studies.
