UVM African Studies Program Updates - 2012/2013
from Prof. Peter Von Doepp, Director
In April, the program in African Studies welcomed Professor Ashley Leinweber of Missouri State University to UVM. An internationally recognized expert on the Congo, Dr. Leinweber spoke to Peter VonDoepp’s POLS 177 class on developments in the Congo since 2006. She also gave a very well attended public lecture on the role of religious organizations in the provision of public goods in post-war Congo.
We are also happy to support a visit to UVM by Dr. Katrien Pype in November. An anthropologist currently doing post-doc at MIT, Dr. Pype gave a public lecture entitled, "Cellular Fantasies: Mobile Phone Practices and Imaginations in Contemporary Kinshasa.
Finally, were very happy to welcome Professor Scott Matter to UVM. With expertise in issues of land tenure, political representation, patronage, indigenous rights, forestry and conservation, and pastoralism, Scott will be teaching classes in Anthropology over the next two years, including several that will be cross-listed with African Studies.
